What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is really nothing more than the act of inducing a hypnotic trance in a client. However trance is a naturally occurring process which all people experience from daydreaming, losing yourself in a great movie, losing track of time doing something you enjoy or having no recollection of how you arrived at a destination. What I do is to induce a light relaxing hypnotic trance using suggestions and the sound of my voice.
This causes the conscious mind to become calmer and less active, allowing your unconscious mind to be used as a resource to help you. In many ways the our problems are also a type of trance and therefore happening unconsciously, so effectively I use hypnosis to ‘dehypnotise’ out of your your problem trance.
My job is to facilitate you using your own inner resources to solve your issue or problem. Hypnosis is most often a relaxing, enjoyable, invigorating experience where people report afterwards as if they have awoken from a deep and refreshing sleep.
Will I lose control?
No you will remain in control at all times. Hypnosis is in no way mind control, your unconscious mind will not accept any suggestions that are in conflict with your moral code.
What is the Conscious and Unconscious Mind?
I’m often asked what is the conscious and unconscious mind? Conscious and Uncoscious mind are metaphors, conscious being the metaphor for the part of our minds that is responsible for anything we deliberately have to think about doing such as new tasks, seeking meaning in all events and actions. Neuroscience has shown that the conscious mind only deals with 5% of our behaviours.
However, this is where Cognitive Hypnotherapy can help because using it allows you to access the older brain system known as the unconscious that looks after the other 95% of behaviour and controls how the brain interprets and holds information. Also how it makes patterns of meaning, and connections between one event and another, and how we create our perception of the world around us.
Because habits, beliefs and values exist mostly at an unconscious level, many of the problems people have find it difficult to resolve them as they are trying to do so with only their conscious minds, which requires a lot of effort and will power to so.
Cognitive Hypnotherapy is effective because I look to help the client make changes to the way their unconscious mind is working, as this is the part that is responsible for most of their behaviour
